Mali Midwives is a charitable organization committed to supporting continuing education efforts for auxiliary midwives in Mali, especially those who serve in rural areas where most Malians live. These auxiliary midwives are called matrones. Matrones attend more births in Mali than any other trained health care worker in the country. For women who do not deliver in a facility but seek assistance for problems, matrones will be their point of access to the formal health care system. This means matrones are absolutely critical in Mali’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality. If matrones cannot provide the care women need, there is little hope maternal mortality in Mali can improve.

Mali Midwives was created after research with Mali’s matrones illustrated their pride and frustration in caring for women and newborns under difficult conditions. Without exception, matrones pleaded for opportunities to update their skills and knowledge. Matrones understand that women and children depend on them for their survival. Mali Midwives was created to provide a forum for professionals, laypeople, and anyone else who is concerned with maternal health to provide direct support to front line health care workers like matrones. Mali Midwives uses donations from donors to pay for matrones’ continuing education activities. We are a registered charitable organization in the state of Illinois. The Village Project, a registered 501c(3), is our fiscal sponsor. This means any donations to Mali Midwives are tax-deductible.
